Remembering Jim Love
We’ve heard news from daughter Carol that cyclist Jim Love sadly passed away on 1 March 2024.
Last summer, Jim joined us at Herne Hill during the South London Grand Prix and we were honoured to see Jim unveil a plaque to mark 75 years since the ‘48 Olympic track events were held, accompanied by his proud family. Jim was delighted to see the youngsters racing at the same meeting as internationals ‘taking part in the best sport in the world’. Jim earned his place in the Olympic Team Pursuit squad of London 1948 games and was a regular rider at Paddington and also Herne Hill: a bad crash a few weeks before the ‘48 Olympics and an off-day at the penultimate training day meant he was reserve in the Bronze medal winning team.
Jim was a lifelong devotee to the sport of cycling, serving as President of both Willesden, and Sotonia Cycling Clubs, the latter of which he was a founder member alongside wife Eileen.
A printer by profession he loved books: most of these are being sold for charity at a Bike Jumble on 21st April in Brockenhurst. Jim was also a keen photographer, his work is now part of the National Cycling Archive held at Warwick University free for anyone to visit.
Jim is survived by his wife and sister, both Eileen, children Brian and Carol, grand-daughters Imogen and Lucy.
