Jan’s Café at HHV
Jan’s Café, upstairs in the Pavilion, is named after Herne Hill legend Jan Slater. Together with her late husband George, Jan has been volunteering at the Velodrome since the 1960s, selflessly serving refreshments to riders and spectators for over 50 years.
Jan might not be around as much anymore but her energy and high standard of refreshments remains. Jan’s is open 10–3pm on weekends and variably throughout the week and seasons.

We have a selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks on most days as well as pastries and panini’s on weekends and our infamous chilli during warmer events!
The history
While George organised events (he could be found running sign-on right up to his death in 2020) Jan worked behind the counter in the old pavilion. When that building fell into disrepair she continued in a decaying prefab office building which didn’t even look on to the racing. When that in turn became un-useable, with dogged determination she moved to a small, wind-battered marquee by the side of the Track, serving tea even on the coldest of days.
With Jan’s incredible dedication in mind, when the Herne Hill Velodrome Trust were planning the new pavilion, a smart new café space was considered essential. The serving hatch was specifically added so that she would be able to see the racing whilst volunteering.
